RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGH

They did it! They did it! They actually did it! I know Hollywood likes to deviate when making a movie out of a book but WOW did they kill it this time!

Everything is touching and moving and almost completely in line with the book right up until the end of the movie. For those of you who have read the novel, this will make sense, so skip the next two paragraphs. The next two paragraphs are for those of you who have not read the novel.

Amazon.com gives this synopsis: Anna was genetically engineered to be a perfect match for her cancer-ridden older sister. Since birth, the 13-year-old has donated platelets, blood, her umbilical cord, and bone marrow as part of her family's struggle to lengthen Kate's life. Anna is now being considered as a kidney donor in a last-ditch attempt to save her 16-year-old sister. As this compelling story opens, Anna has hired a lawyer to represent her in a medical emancipation suit to allow her to have control over her own body.

At the end of the book, Anna is involved in a fatal car accident after winning the rights to her own body. Her organs are used to save her sister, and Kate lives on, wondering why she is still alive, but accepting it.

THEY KILLED IT! THEY RUINED IT! In the end of the movie, KATE dies! Kate, the sickly one, the one everybody EXPECTS to die, she dies! The book's ending whacks you upside the head with its injustice and unpredictability! The movie's ending is a self-indulgent sniffle-fest filled with feel-good filling! Kate dies?! No! No, freaking movie! Anna dies, and Kate lives! Is that too difficult to get across? Seriously! How does Hollywood see "Anna dies, Kate lives" and produce "Kate dies, Anna lives"??? Where's the justification in that?? I want to know if the author (Picoult) authorized this ending, or if she was legally helpless to do anything as the ending of her bestselling novel was destroyed in one fell cinematic stroke.
